Flat 2D vector

Clean flat-vector animation with bold outlines, solid fills and no shading.

Clean flat-vector animation with bold even outlines, solid fills, no shading, no gradients, generous negative space.

It is one of 18 visual styles for Hermoso’s narrated explainer videos, and like every style except the photoreal default it is strictly non-photorealistic by design.

When to pick it

Software, process and systems explainers. The most legible style in the set at small sizes, and the one that survives compression best.

Channel defaults

No channel defaults to this style, so you pick it explicitly. A named style always outranks a channel default, and every style in the catalog works on every channel.

The style at a glance

  • Register: non-photoreal.
  • Summary: Clean flat-vector animation with bold outlines, solid fills and no shading.
  • Style id: flat_vector.

How a style is held across a whole film

A narrated explainer is dozens of frames, roughly one every second and a half, cut together so the motion is the edit rather than a fake zoom over a still. Holding one look across that many frames is the hard part, and the pipeline does it by rendering a single style key image first and locking every later frame to it, plus a continuity sheet that carries the recurring subjects.

The style is also separate from the channel (explainer, history, kids or fairy tale), which sets the pacing, the narration register and the story grammar. A channel supplies a default look; naming a style always overrides it. An unrecognised style is refused by name rather than silently swapped for the default, because silently shipping the wrong picture under the right name is worse than an error.

Which style survives compression best?

This one. Solid fills, even outlines and no gradients give video compression very little to smear, so it stays legible at small sizes and on a bad connection where a textured style turns to mush.

  • Stickman cartoon: Hand-drawn stick figures on a plain field, the classic doodle explainer.
  • Editorial collage: Halftone photo cutouts, flat colour fields and hand-drawn marker accents, with documentary energy.
  • Whiteboard doodle: Marker sketch on a whiteboard, with diagrams, arrows and simple icons.
  • Cinematic: Filmic editorial photography, the look this lane has always shipped.
  • Ink & marker: Bold black brush ink on off-white paper, a high-contrast editorial monochrome.
  • Mannequin reenactment: Clay-render mannequin reenactment, with smooth featureless figures in solid role colors acting out history.
